Three out of four women will experience a vaginal yeast infection at some point in their lifetime. This problem, known as vaginal thrush, is caused by an overgrowth of the yeast Candida in the vagina. For most women, treating vaginal thrush with pharmaceutical creams or suppositories is the first course of action. These treatments usually work well.
However, some women have repeated (recurring) bouts of thrush which may need longer courses of treatment or a maintenance plan that includes taking antifungal product orally to treat the problem systemically.
Those who suffer from vaginal thrush will be all too aware of the symptoms which include burning, itching, redness and white discharge. These symptoms can be extremely distressing or even painful. If you have recurrent bouts of vaginal thrush that just keep coming back, you may feel at your wits end.
First and foremost, if you have recurring vaginal thrush, do not despair. There are steps you can take to stop this problem in its tracks and get back to healthy you.
It’s important to allow airflow to the region. This means avoiding wearing synthetic underwear because it doesn’t breathe well and avoiding wearing very tight clothes. It’s also a good idea to wear no undies at night.
It’s also worth taking a good look at your diet. Eating a diet rich in vegetables, protein, good fats and wholegrains is the best approach and definitely avoid foods high in sugar.
If you are experiencing recurrent bouts of thrush, you’re probably searching for additional support to speed your road to recovery. As a next step in your plan, you may want to consider taking an antifungal supplement.
There is very good evidence to show that New Zealand’s native Horopito plant is effective at supporting the body against recurrent vaginal thrush. Researchers at the University of Milan have conducted two long term studies comparing the effectiveness of taking Horopito supplements against a treatment regime of pharmaceutical products.
What they found is ground breaking for women who suffer this recurrent condition. Those women taking supplements containing Horopito plant had better long term results than those on pharmaceutical products.
Those women taking Horopito supplements for recurrent vaginal thrush had fewer relapses and were “mycologically cured” at a significantly higher rate, than those on the pharmaceutical treatment regime.
The science behind this is that Horopito provides antifungal support that seems to produce less strain resistance. This is good news for those of you who are at your wits end with recurrent thrush.
Recurring vaginal thrush can be a sign of complicating factors such as uncontrolled diabetes, pregnancy, or hormonal changes. Some of the symptoms of vaginal thrush can also be mistaken for another vaginal infection – bacterial vaginosis – which is accompanied by a strong unpleasant odour. Because of the possibilities of these complications, it is advisable to see your doctor if you keep getting vaginal thrush.
