Matcha powder is an easy and simple way to add a powerful punch to your health each day. Matcha quite simply delivers a mega dose of antioxidants. Antioxidants are natural chemicals that are manufactured in your body that help you clean up little cells called free radicals. Free radicals are formed by exposure to toxic substances (pollution, chemicals, radiation, blue light, UV and stress and also the waste products that come from your daily digestion of food and the millions of chemical reactions that are occurring constantly inside of you). Antioxidants get in and do their good work which help to prevent the signs of aging (hello- yes please!) and the onset of disease. Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC) testing developed by the US Department of Agriculture and Tufts University (Massachusetts US) did a study in showed that Matcha tea has almost 5 times the amount of antioxidant activity than well known “superfoods”.
Calm yet not sleepy
When you consume Matcha you consume the entire leaf, unlike green tea where you can only extract a small amount of the goodness through the hot water you brew your cuppa in. Matcha is almost calorie free and does not raise blood pressure or your heart rate (unlike other popular beverages of choice). It has been used in Japan for centuries to help monks to meditate. The Monks would drink Matcha and then sit quietly for many hours in a concentrated, calm quiet state, alert and not sleepy. Science has provided the answers now- showing us that Matcha has L-Theanine, an amino acid that helps us to feel relaxed whilst our brain still functions as normal. L-Theanine is common in most teas, but shade grown Matcha may contain up to 5 times more of this amino acid that is already common in black or even healthier green teas. Without delivering the jittery highs and big crashes that are typical with caffeine. L- Theanine also supports your body’s production of dopamine and serotonin which are two important chemicals which support your sleep patterns, balanced mood and mental focus.
The strong green colour is also an indication of the health benefits this tea provides. It is chlorophyll that gives plants their characteristic green colour. Chlorophyll also helps you to detoxify, binding with heavy metals and other chemicals present (especially those that mess with your hormones) in the body so they can be eliminated naturally. True Matcha tea is covered with dark cloth for the last few weeks which is why it has an even darker green colour, meaning it has even more Chlorophyll that other teas.
Japanese Samurai warriors also drank Matcha tea before going to war, to get the natural energy high it provides. Don’t forget that the Japanese people live to be some of the world’s oldest. Part of this ability to reach 100 = years in good health has been attributed to the regular daily consumption of Matcha Green tea.
Check your cuppa
It is important to bring up a word of caution… As you are ingesting the entire leaf, some varieties of Matcha can be high in lead or other heavy metals and not so helpful chemicals. Always look for NZ certified organic varieties (which means they are grown in an ethical way, and have followed proper organic protocols and been handled in an organic manner to prevent contamination throughout the entire supply chain). Always check to make sure the manufacturer has had each batch of the tea tested to ensure toxic metals and radiation levels are safe before you pop on the kettle for your cuppa. If you are sensitive to Caffeine try starting with a small dose to begin with and take it early in the day to prevent it keeping you awake when you would rather be sleeping.
